Catalog to Use for Academic Plan Requirements
To earn your degree you must complete all specified degree requirements (i.e. major, minor, certificate, university requirements) from only one edition of Northern Arizona University's Academic Catalog. If you complete coursework leading to a non-required minor or certificate, you may complete the minor or certificate requirements from that edition or any future edition of Northern Arizona University's Academic Catalog.
You must meet the degree requirements described in:
- the NAU catalog edition in effect when you initially enrolled at NAU, or the NAU catalog edition in effect when you initially enrolled at another Arizona public higher education institution
- you may choose to change to any one subsequent catalog edition through your time to graduation
provided you maintain continuous enrollment.*
Students admitted or readmitted (see Applying for Re-admission, #100317) during a winter, spring or summer term, follow the requirements of the Catalog in effect the previous Fall semester.
*How is continuous enrollment determined?
Each term that you earn course credit counts toward continuous enrollment; we do not count non-credit courses, audited courses, failed courses, or courses from which you withdraw.
You must have earned credit in any of the last three consecutive terms to be considered continuously enrolled. If you have not earned credit in any of the last three consecutive terms, you must follow a later catalog for your degree requirements.
In determining whether you have been continuously enrolled for three consecutive terms, we count Fall-Spring-Fall or Spring-Fall-Spring sequences during which you earned course credit. You can also use the Summer or Winter terms to maintain continuous enrollment (though if you don’t earn credit during the Summer or Winter terms, that isn’t counted against you). We also count any terms of study at other Arizona public community colleges or universities toward this three-term sequence.
For graduate students, continuous enrollment is expected. See Continuous Enrollment, Graduate, #100326.
Transfer Students from within Arizona
If you have attended another state-supported Arizona college or university and then transferred to Northern Arizona University, and if you meet the continuous enrollment criteria listed above, you may use the catalog in effect when you first enrolled at that other Arizona institution. In such cases, students must meet NAU admission, residency, and academic requirements to graduate with an NAU degree.
Transferring credits to a graduate degree program is not routinely done. See Transfer Credit - Graduate Students, #100336.
Dual Major (Undergraduate)
If you have a dual undergraduate major, the major requirements for each of your majors must come from the same catalog.
Dual Degree (Undergraduate)
If you have a dual undergraduate degree, it is possible that the degree requirements for your two degrees can come from two different catalogs, depending on the timing of your admission to Northern Arizona University and the catalogs in effect during your enrollment.
